Coaching Tiny Tykes
Take this opportunity to review some key reminders heading into the season. The sooner you become familiar with these rules and practice the guidelines, the smoother the season will go.
• Remember why we are here, this is all about FUN, FUN, FUN.....and more FUN!!!.
Before you start your first practice, make sure you fit, cut and tape the flag belts. Flag sockets should also be facing OUT. VIEW THE RIGHT WAY. They should be CUT and TAPED CORRECTLY!
When flags are cut but NOT taped, they will eventually lossen and fall. HERE'S AN EXAMPLE
Ultimately we are trying to prevent THIS OUTCOME where there are loose flag belts and there's an extra piece of the flag hanging.
Be sure to DOWNLOAD THE RULES so that you have a clear understanding of how the rules are different for the Tiny Tykes.
There is only one formation. Once the cones are set, they will stay stationary the entire game. USE THE CONES AT PRACTICE EVERYDAY. Bring your cones (with your name on them) to the field and use them during the game. Please reference the FIELD ALIGNMENT SHEET so you know how to set the cones up.
Check the FIELD LAYOUT, this will help you set the cones up for the offense and defense.
View the PLAYER ROTATION, teach this everyday at practice. This will only make the game time expeerience run that much more smoother for everyone.
There are no motions or shifts. Only one formation. Once the cones are set, they will stay stationary the entire game. USE THE CONES AT PRACTICE EVERYDAY!
Time slots will be 1 hour. 5-10 mins to get situated then the game will get started no later than 15 mins after the scheduled start time. The goal is to get each kid 2-3 carries a game. The game will end, NO MATTER WHAT, 5 mins before the hour to give the team time to shake hands and get off the field for the next two teams to arrive.
• On offense there will be NO SUBSTITUTION DURING YOUR OFFENSIVE POSSESSION. 5 players, 5 plays. After one kid runs the ball (hopefully for a TD), assign kids to a different cone (different position) and run the ball again. Again, view the PLAYER ROTATION. On defense (since all 5 kids will be running after the ball carrier) you can make substitutions as much as you want during the possession.
• One coach on offense and one coach on defense MUST have a whistle. Only blow the whistle when the kid scores a TD or if the ball is fumbled. If the player falls down or Even if the player's flag is pulled, let them get up and make it to the endzone!
Each team can have (at the most) two coaches on the field. On offense, the 2nd manager or parent is encouraged to stand in the endzone as a point of destination for the kids to run to.
